Church's 'terrible failure' on abuse

Melbourne Archbishop Denis Hart insists he has not tried to blame dead church figures for the archdiocese's "terrible failure" to act on abuse complaints.
Archbishop Hart says his predecessors failed to act, but excluded 1996-2001 Melbourne archbishop Cardinal George Pell from his criticism.
Archbishop Hart says former archbishop Frank Little put children in danger by not acting on complaints about Fr Peter Searson, one of a succession of pedophile priests in the Doveton parish.

All victims of abuse sanctioned by the state deserve the same right to compensation

NSW and Victoria recently announced their support for compensation for the victims of child sexual abuse. If a national scheme is established, these states will contribute millions of dollars to cover the shortfall from the institutions responsible for the harm. NSW Attorney-General Gabrielle Upton has said this is "the best way to ensure consistent, accessible justice for survivors" and that governments have a "moral commitment to assist" people who have "suffered at the hands of Commonwealth and state institutions".

Speak Out: Silence is conspiracy

“Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak: but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law.”
I Corinthians 34
The misogyny of the christian churches is yet another reason that governments should not keep pouring money into these corrupt institutions, strengthening their grip at the core of society. We must speak out.
The Cross was cranky last week that the Qld Government released a tender for a domestic violence shelter designed so that only the major Catholic organisation on the very short list of those invited to respond could conceivably win it.

Not long ago, Tuesday morning’s revelations at the royal commission into institutional responses to child abuse would have made headlines round the world. Priest after priest in the Melbourne archdiocese of the Catholic church was caught abusing children. And for decades bishop after bishop ignored these crimes.

Rome influenced abuse handling: inquiry

THE Catholic Church in Rome pulled the strings and told Australian parishes how to handle child sex abuse complaints, a former priest says.
FRANK Little, who was archbishop of Melbourne from 1974 and 1996, would try everything to avoid scandal and was particularly loyal to Rome, former priest Philip O'Donnell has told the child abuse royal commission.
"I personally think he had a misplaced loyalty to Rome when faced with the dilemma of how to handle this particular problem, and he made the wrong decision," Mr O'Donnell told the inquiry on Tuesday.

"I just thought it was utterly inappropriate for an adult male, particularly a parish priest, to be showering with a young lad," Mr O'Donnell told the child abuse royal commission on Tuesday.

More than 450 children have been sexually abused in the Archdiocese of Melbourne, mainly by priests, the child abuse royal commission says.
Counsel assisting the commission Gail Furness SC says the church has paid a total of $16.8 million to 454 people since 1980, once treatment, legal and other costs are taken into account.
The highest number of complaints – 56 – were against Kevin O’Donnell, the parish priest at Sacred Heart Parish in Oakleigh.

Catholic Church releases new guidelines to deal with child sex abuse claims, critics label 'disingenuous'

The Catholic Church has released new guidelines to deal with claims of child sexual abuse, which it says will promote a more compassionate approach towards victims.
But child abuse survivors and their lawyers say the guidelines are disingenuous because they do not expressly reject the controversial Ellis defence — a court ruling that the church is not a legal entity which can be sued.

Church response to sex abuse falls short

A body representing the Catholic Church has released guidelines for how the church should respond to civil claims for child sexual abuse, which have received mixed reviews from a sexual abuse survivor and lawyer.
The Truth, Justice and Healing Council published the guidelines yesterday, which aim to “promote justice and consistency” with the church’s handling of sexual abuse claims and litigation. They include that church authorities should pay “legitimate claims without litigation” and “assist a claimant to identify the correct defendant to respond to legal proceedings”.

A former Marist Brother, who was later appointed as a "director of child safety", is facing child-sex charges re two Sydney schools

When he was a Marist Brother in his mid-twenties, Brother Brett Anthony O'Connor was at two prominent Sydney schools. Then he left the Marist Order and began a new career, eventually (in 2012) becoming the Director of Child Safety in the Queensland Government's Department of Education and Training. In 2015, New South Wales police have charged O'Connor with alleged child-sex offences, relating to his earlier career as a Marist Brother in Sydney — at St Joseph's College in Hunters Hill and St Gregory's College in Campbelltown. O'Connor, now aged 52, is currently scheduled for hearings in a NSW court. In late 2015, police have increased the number of O'Connor's alleged victims and the number of charges. Child abuse royal commission: Peter Hollingworth's apology in full

This is an apology to the survivors of abuse.

The former governor-general and ex-Archbishop of Anglican Diocese of Brisbane, Dr Peter Hollingworth, was one of the final witnesses to appear in the two-week Brisbane hearing of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Abuse. Here is his apology.
This is an apology to the survivors of abuse. I have asked to make an apology before I give evidence to the Royal Commission. I do so, Your Honour, as an individual person and as a former archbishop. My apology is to the children, now adults, and the families of those who have been abused. It's offered to all of you who have suffered great pain and become disillusioned that your complaints were not dealt with from the outset as they should have been.

Ex-principal thought counsellor 'slipped up'

The former principal of a Brisbane school says he thought a pedophile counsellor might have made a 'slip up, or a silliness' after two students complained about the man spreading details of their penis sizes.

Former St Paul's head Gilbert Case is continuing his evidence at the child abuse royal commission.

On Friday he was presented with a letter he wrote to a lawyer citing complaints by two victims of Kevin John Lynch that the counsellor had spread information about their penis sizes in September 1995.

Were things really that different back then?

One of the most common arguments by the many sexual predators who have been exposed in recent times is that “things were different back then”.
“It was another time,” they say. “The rules were different.”
But surely the rules weren’t so different that students could swallow their pride and fears and go to their principal to report the sexual abuse of a peer, only to be dismissed.

Nicky Davis

For decades Nicky Davis was one of the silent majority of clergy abuse victims who believed no one would ever face responsibility for the many crimes against her. She finally reported her abuse after the appalling treatment of Australian survivors by Pope Benedict at World Youth Day 2008 in Sydney. Nicky's perpetrator was arrested, despite the best efforts of church officials to hide the truth and she and the multiple eyewitnesses to her abuse prepared themselves for trial, until Australia's predator friendly court system denied Nicky access to justice.
