News and Views about catholic clergy sexual abuse and related issues

Why only terrorists? Hang Catholic Rapist Priests too, deliver justice!

This would only be in line with their own hocus-pocus teachings. The catholic Church has continuously investigated sexual abuse and procedures by their own ilk, since the Council of Elvira in 309 C.E. and has nevertheless indulged in these crimes ever since, for nearly 2000 Years. If we now start to believe or trust, liars, criminals, cheats and deceivers, we have only ourselves to blame.

Australian inquiry scrutinizes church

Sydney Australian survivors of clerical sexual abuse have been complaining for years about their dissatisfaction with Towards Healing, the Catholic church's national protocol for responding to abuse.

The inner workings of Towards Healing were laid bare in November and December during two weeks of public hearings held here before the Royal Commission Into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, chaired by New South Wales Supreme Court Judge Peter McClellan.

The True Scandal of the Magdalene Laundries

The newly released movie Philomena, from British filmmaker Stephen Frears, starring Judi Dench and Steve Coogan, is inspired by a tragic book written by Martin Sixsmith. It is the true story of a woman searching for her lost son, a lifelong quest that will take her from the UK to America, a desperate quest and heart-wrenching saga.
Taking place in Ireland, which explains some of the conservative positions of the highly Catholic society in which she lives, Philomena, the woman in the film, found herself pregnant out of wedlock (such a word) shipped away to a convent of sort, and forced by nuns to give up her baby boy to a rich family.

The Salvation Army’s Global Abuse (Or: It’s Still Happening, Worldwide)

Whenever child sexual abuse by clergy is revealed, the church involved always says that these things happened decades ago, and that procedures are in place to ensure such crimes can no longer occur. This has been the theme at the recent New South Wales State government and Victorian State Parliamentary enquiries. It has also been used by the Catholic and Anglican churches, the YMCA and Scouts Australia at the hearings of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.

Catholicism and Child Sexual Abuse in Latin America

Archbishop and Papal Nuncio Józef Wesołowski is the latest member of the Catholic faith to face allegations of child sexual abuse. Dominican Republic prosecutors investigating the former man of the cloth have concluded that he sexually abused at least five boys under the age of 15. Santo Domingo, the country's capital city, is where allegations first aired on a local program, stating that Wesołowski paid to have sex with minor boys.

Fear, embarrassment, even guilt. These are things that most survivors of sexual abuse feel at some point. The strength it takes to move on after this abuse is tangible, and yet so many will still not fight against it. Being abused by anyone is tragic, especially when it comes from someone you are supposed to be able to trust. It changes your perspective on how you see people, even those closest to you. Over the next month as we continue to talk about sexual abuse inside the Catholic Church one thing needs to be made clear; it is okay to get help. Taking that first step and admitting you are or have been harmed is the hardest part, but you may be surprised to learn that you are not alone, and there are so many people willing to help you find the relief and justice you deserve.

Why Is Pope Francis Avoiding Key Challenges?

In a surprisingly candid assessment about a much anticipated speech today by Pope Francis, a leading Vatican reporter, John Allen of CNN and the National Catholic Reporter, stated: “Given that a cleanup operation in the Roman Curia was a large part of the mandate Francis received from the cardinals who elected him, and given the fevered speculation in Rome about what further changes might be coming, many observers were anxious to see if Francis would drop some hints in his Saturday morning speech. In the end, there was nothing like that.”

Christianity faces a challenge from forces within

ONE thing your editorial failed to mention is that the forces pitted against Christianity outside the West are aided and abetted by the forces of political correctness in the West ("A grim outlook for Christianity", 26/12).
These self-appointed elites maintain that anti-Christian (and in particular anti-Catholic) bigotry is the last acceptable form of discrimination. Fundamentalist Muslims know this and ride on its shirt-tails because they know the minorities that run roughshod over Western history and values aren't going to complain or protest.
Western anti-Christian elites are quite happy to see Christians persecuted elsewhere because they would like to silence Christianity.
Phillip Turnbull, Cornelian Bay, Tas
IN deploring the persecution of Christians, your editorial rightly castigates a widespread failure to observe internationally recognised rights to freedom of religion, thought and conscience and freedom of expression.

Eastern religion has its share of abuse too

Midway through 1968, a disillusioned and angry John Lennon could be found inside the Beatles' London offices channelling his frustration by scratching the lyrics to a new song into a piece of wood.
Lennon had recently returned from an ashram in India, where he and the other members of the Fab Four received instruction in transcendental meditation from a giggling Hindu guru named Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Lennon had stormed from the ashram in disgust, convinced the Maharishi had morphed from guru to groper in his behaviour towards a number of young Western women, including actor Mia Farrow. The Beatle's wood-carved words became the basis for the song Sexy Sadie, the title being Lennon's litigation-proof pseudonym for the allegedly randy rishi of Rishikesh, whose covert lechery had, in his estimation, ''made a fool of everyone''.
In the decades following the Mop Tops-met-Maharishi imbroglio, accusations of Sexy Sadie-like behaviour by prominent figures from Eastern religions have grown in number and seriousness.
As with Western religious institutions, perceived spiritual power has led men in positions of authority to avail themselves of opportunities for pursuing more earthly impulses - as we have learnt through the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sex Abuse.
Yet here and internationally, the result has been that many devotees seeking higher consciousness have instead found themselves more exploited than enlightened.

Criticism of Pell not borne out by facts

Cardinal George Pell has been in Sydney since 2001. There is no suggestion that he is guilty of covering up cases of abuse, or attempting to stop people bringing complaints to the police, or reappointing offenders to positions of authority in his diocese (Letters, December 27). He has ensured that what happened before he was a bishop has not happened during his tenure.
Despite this, Barney Zwartz speaks of Pell's ''discredited approach to tackling sexual abuse'' (''A final, unsolicited tip for Pell and Hart'', December 26).
Pell has regularly acknowledged and apologised for the failure of Church personnel, yet Ted Keating (Letters, December 27) claims that ''No one has defended the indefensible more repeatedly''.

Fugitive priest found by Dallas Morning News pleads guilty again to sex-abuse charges

A notorious figure from our 2004-2005 series about the Catholic Church’s global transfer of sexually abusive priests has admitted to molesting even more children.
Australian prosecutors had filed 34 criminal charges against Frank Klep. That number was cut to 12 in a guilty plea this month, according to news reports. The 70-year-old now awaits an April pre-sentencing hearing in Melbourne.
During the recent court hearing, Klep said only one word.
“Guilty.”
This is Klep’s third time through Australia’s justice system. The latest charges arose from a parliamentary inquiry last year and involve 14 now-grown boys.

Wichtiger Streit

The Salvation Army Position On Sexuality (Or: They Don’t Just Shoot Horses)

Last year an Australian Salvation Army officer created quite a stir during a radio interview on the organization’s attitude towards non-heterosexuals. The officer involved, “Major” Andrew Craibe was the Media Director for the salvos in the states of Tasmania, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia, so he would have been well aware of the potential media fall-out from his on-air comments.

Pope Francis hits reset and it's Tony Abbott and George Pell who must adjust

Just around the corner from where I am staying in Rome is Gammarelli, a small shop that describes itself as ''Sartoria per Ecclesiastici'' - clothing for religious orders - but the small white skullcap in the window offers the vital clue that this store is different from the several others in the neighbourhood that sell priests' vestments. This is where the Pope shops. And here in the window is another sign of the many ways in which Pope Francis is embarking upon radical change in the church he was elected to lead last March. Gone from display are the red loafers favoured by his predecessors. In their place a pair of humble black buckled brogues.

Pope Mouth on Baby Jesus Thigh Image Turns Pedophile Priest Victims' Stomachs

This pic may be religious to some, but with hundreds of thousands around the world going public that Catholic priests raped us as children, the Vatican should take great pains to avoid releasing images like this where the Pope appears to be nibbling on the Baby Jesus's thigh while the child looks up in ecstasy. Oh, no, I see, he's not nibbling the thigh he's just kissing it. Grotesque.
The photo churned up awful awful memories as soon as I saw it, since I was age five when Father Horne diddled me, and our position and posture was likely very similar to this image. The statue being Baby Jesus just adds to the confusion in the triggers the image musters.
The Vatican has recently revised its PR machine putting a former Fox News exec in charge, and they release this picture?
That they can be so crass as to put the Pope in this position with cameras around him tells me that Catholic Church heirarchy still don't see the damage they did to us, or the gravity of hundreds of thousands of sex crimes against children unprosecuted. With a wave of a hand to the cameraman, they dismiss the pain of victims all over the world who will see this photo.

The Salvation Army in Australia appears to be resolutely hypocritical about what it regards as sins. Older Australians will remember when the Salvos would congregate outside hotels, making a lot of noise, and preaching against the evils of the “demon drink”. They also opposed legalizing gambling establishments.

The essence of Christianity is to share wealth

MERV Bendle (Letters, 24/12) plays Scrooge to Archbishop Denis Hart's Ghost of Christmas Past ("By making economy more personal, money will serve us and not rule", 23/12), giving a bah-humbug to the latter's plea to put people before markets.
In the process, Bendle makes some extraordinary claims, denying the existence of any successful managed economies in terms of production and distribution of wealth (ignoring the many affluent European social democracies), and equating non-market economies with poverty (overlooking the many laissez-faire disaster zones in the developing world).
Research shows that what wealthy nations have in common includes transparent democracy, high education levels, natural resources, and less edifying things such as colonial history. Their choice of economic system has little, if any, relevance.

Healing starts with fresh blood at the top

The Catholic Church must make a clean sweep and break with a sullied past by excising its tainted leaders.

Last December, when I was about to leave The Age, I prepared a final column that was not published because I agreed to stay for another year. It began: ''This is probably the world's most public job application - and the most futile. As I lay down my pen after 31 years as an Age journalist, I believe I still have something to offer one large employer: the Catholic Church in Australia.
''I have generously given so much advice for free on these pages and in my blog, but it is human nature not to esteem what you get for free compared with what you pay for.

The Australian Salvation Army’s Finances (Or: Melding Church And State)

The Salvation Army in Australia receives nearly half of its income from the taxpayer. In some countries this would raise concerns about state-supported religion. It would be of further concern to such people that the Salvation Army has not only a special status of being tax-free and not required to give any information on its finances or spending, it is also exempted from other laws, such as discrimination  in employment and adherence to the minimum wage laws applicable to general businesses, in certain cases.
The organisation has always courted Australian politicians; especially Prime Ministers (see photos below). This is because the most money can be obtained from the Federal, rather than the State, governments.

OPINION: Sex abuse probe will reveal further failings

THE Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse ended four months of public hearings with a sting.
On the receiving end was YMCA NSW, which had spent weeks arguing it was also the victim of a paedophile who had infiltrated the childcare provider.
The paedophile was Jonathan Lord, now 27, and in jail for six years. His victims were children aged six to 11 who attended the YMCA childcare centre at Caringbah in south Sydney in 2010 and 2011.
Parents who were told YMCA NSW was a leader in child safety, even after Lord was arrested, were also victims, the commission heard.
Up to December 20, the last sitting day for 2013, the YMCA argued that master manipulator Lord had fooled junior staff who had been trained but ignored child-safety protocols.
This argument was torn apart when Gail Furness, senior counsel advising the commission, delivered a damning indictment of the association based on evidence so far.

Victoria church leaders pray for abuse victims

Victorian church leaders have acknowledged victims of abuse and urged the community to open their hearts to others while celebrating Christmas.
Melbourne Catholic Archbishop Denis Hart says people must remember victims of violence, those abused by clergy and the thousands left devastated by natural disasters, such as in the Philippines.
In his Christmas message he says the community's response to such tragedies must always be of compassion, action and solidarity.
"We are also a church touched by grief, especially when we see innocent people suffer," he said.
"We pray especially for the innocent victims of sexual abuse in the church and acknowledge the courage of those victims who have come forward to speak of their abuse."
Anglican Archbishop of Melbourne Dr Philip Freier urged people to remember the story of Jesus Christ on Christmas Day.

'Lessons learned here will help others'

Archbishop Diarmuid Martin has said he hopes the Vatican's newly announced commission on child sexual abuse can learn the lessons of the Irish church's "appalling situation" and help other countries deal with the issue.

The committee was set up earlier this month to improve measures to protect children against sexual abuse within the Catholic Church.

"I fully welcome this," Dr Martin told the Irish Independent.
"I hope it will ensure that what has been achieved in countries like Ireland can be spread around the world and lessons can be learned both about the effects of abuse on survivors and their families and the roots and causes of abuse."
He also hoped the commission would ensure that the church, globally, is a safer place for children.

Bishop didn't get message because it was written in Latin

BISHOP Geoffrey Jarrett told the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse he didn't report an allegation against Lismore's Father Paul Rex Brown to the Vatican because he wasn't aware there had been a directive from the Pope to do so.
Bishop Jarrett was recall- ed to the Commission in relation to the case of Jennifer Ingham, who was sexually abused by Father Brown between 1978 and 1982.
A complaint against Father Brown was made in 2002, a year after the Pope ordered bishops around the world to report any allegations of child sexual abuse to the Vatican if there was a "semblance of truth" in the case.
However, Bishop Jarrett told the Royal Commission he had failed to do so because some directives "may not be remembered or acted upon".

Canberra's Anglican, Catholic leaders share Christmas messages

The Anglican Church in Canberra and Goulburn has used its annual Christmas message to reach out to those who have been hurt by the church.
This year the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse heard there were potentially dozens of paedophiles in the Anglican clergy across Australia who had not been formerly identified due to poor safeguards.
Bishop Stuart Robinson says faithfulness and broken promises are heavy on the hearts of leaders in the church.
"If you have been mistreated, or injured, or self-excluded for any reason, we want you to know that you are welcome in our churches," he said.
"Christmas is a time of great celebration, the churches are open, the welcome is warm and we'd love you to continue with us into 2014."

The Yarmulke Conspiracy

IT NOW SEEMS OBVIOUS, and this should surprise and repulse some members of the Jewish community, but Melbourne’s conservative Yeshivah College has been as bad as the Catholic Church in protecting paedophiles and covering up their sex crimes against children.
What really pisses me off here is that Catholic Church leaders, and powerful men in the Jewish hierarchy, thought (and I fear, still think) that protecting the barn is more important than safeguarding your flock.  It’s a shocking, continuing theme.
That whistleblower, Manny Waks, was right when he claimed that rabbis at Yeshivah College were Yiddish George Pells when it came to sexual assaults and cover-ups.
Was right to bravely start an advocacy group called Tzedek for Jewish child sex abuse victims in their own Orthodox college in St. Kilda.
The Age also ran damning stories about the culture of it being against Jewish law to go outside the religion to complain to Police.
And on 3AW I interviewed Waks several times before the radio station carpet-strollers sacked me for being obsessed ‘with this paedophile thing’.

Cardinal George Pell urges Christians to be bold

AUSTRALIA'S highest ranking Catholic has urged fellow Christians not to "lapse into timid silence" in the face of adversity, as church leaders across the country delivered their annual Christmas messages.
In the wake of the royal commission into institutional child sex abuse, Cardinal George Pell painted a picture of a church and religion under siege after one of the most tumultuous years for the Catholic Church.
"We acknowledge the wide scepticism and occasional hostility of those around us," Mr Pell said. "But because we know Christ, we should have the courage of our convictions, we should not lapse into timid silence and we should not be frightened to appear as different.
"Our new Pope Francis has warned us of these dangers, urging us not to lapse into small-minded melancholy, not allow ourselves to be submerged by bitterness and fatigue."
Mr Pell also made reference to "hectic and confused times" and said the challenge for Christians was not atheism but how to respond to those looking for God.
"Christians cannot answer this challenge if we look like we have just come from a funeral," he said.

After a tumultuous year, a season of light and shade

FROM the time its founder walked the dusty lanes of the Middle East more than 2000 years ago, Christianity has been a religion of light and darkness.
Each Christmas and at Easter, it renews its promises of love, generosity, hope and, for those who accept its teachings, redemption. Forgiveness and atonement are also an intrinsic part of the Christian message, an acknowledgment that weakness of character, sinfulness and sometimes evil are part of the human condition. This Christmas, after years of appalling publicity over their mishandling of child sexual abuse, it is the mainstream Christian churches themselves, and other institutions, that have been forced to confront their failures and seek forgiveness from the wider society.

SA Full Court rules Anglican Church has power to investigate, discipline rogue priests accused of misbehaviour

THE Anglican Church has the legal right to investigate and internally discipline priests accused of bad behaviour, the state's highest court has ruled.
In a unanimous decision this morning, the Full Court of the Supreme Court granted orders sought by the Anglican Church in Australia and the Diocese of the Murray.
Chief Justice Chris Kourakis and Justices Tom Gray and David Peek declared the Church's Professional Standards Board had the right to investigate and discipline controversial priest Peter Coote.
They further ruled an independent review of that board's decision to be invalid.
The judgment means there is no avenue for disgruntled former priests to file civil claims over their sackings or disciplinings.
It also brings to an end an eight-year dispute over Father Coote - the subject of sexual misconduct and inappropriate behaviour complaints involving three southern suburbs women.
An internal diocese committee heard one woman attempted suicide after Father Coote allegedly entered her home without permission and had sex with her.

British police raid Lord Janner's home in sex abuse investigation

The 85-year-old World Jewish Congress VP was not arrested in the raid, police say.

British police have searched the house of the 85-year-old vice president of the World Jewish Congress as part of an ongoing historical sex abuse investigation.
Lord Greville Janner, a former Labour member of parliament and current member of the House of Lords, was not arrested in the raid in his apartment in the Barnet borough of north London, the Mirror Online reported.
"Officers have executed a search warrant at a property in Barnet, London, as part of an ongoing criminal enquiry,” a police spokesman said.
Janner's lawyers told the Mirror that their client had been “assisting the police with their inquiries."

Rolf Harris facing three further sex abuse charges: prosecutors

AUSTRALIAN entertainer Rolf Harris is facing three additional sex assault charges involving two new alleged victims, one aged "seven or eight'' at the time.
The additional counts mean Harris, 83, is now accused of assaulting four victims dating back to the late 1960s. He's facing 16 separate charges in total.
"`Rolf Harris is to be prosecuted over a further three allegations of indecent assault,'' the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said in a statement.
"The alleged offences relate to one existing complainant and two new complainants.''
Harris was already facing six counts of indecently assaulting a 15-year-old girl in 1980 and 1981 and three charges of indecent assault on a girl aged 14 in 1986.
He was also charged previously with four counts of making indecent images of a child in the first half of 2012.
The additional counts include one offence of indecent assault ``relating to a girl aged seven or eight in 1968 or 1969'', the CPS said.

The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse ended 2013 and four months of public hearings with a sting.
On the receiving end was YMCA NSW, which had spent weeks arguing it was also the victim of a pedophile who had infiltrated the self-proclaimed leading childcare provider.
The pedophile was Jonathan Lord, now 27, and in jail for six years. His victims were children aged between six and 11 who attended the YMCA childcare centre at Caringbah in south Sydney in 2010 and 2011.
Parents who were told YMCA NSW was a leader in child safety, even after Lord was arrested, were also victims, the commission has heard.
Up to December 20, the last sitting day for 2013, the YMCA tried to hold the line that master manipulator Lord had fooled junior staff who had been well trained but ignored child-safety protocols.
This argument was torn apart when Gail Furness, senior counsel advising the commission, delivered a damning indictment of the association based on the evidence so far.

The church's 50-year cover-up of Father Finian Egan: The inside story

By a Broken Rites researcher (article updated 22 December 2013)
For 50 years, Sydney child-abuser Father Finian Egan was supported by the Catholic Church and influential friends but he was finally brought to justice by three of his victims, with help from Broken Rites.
Egan was sentenced on 20 December 2014 to at least four years' jail after a jury found him guilty of seven counts of indecent assault and one count of rape, committed against three girls who were aged from 10 to 17 in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.
These victims have slammed the Catholic Church for harbouring Egan in the priesthood for five decades, putting numerous children in danger.

Broken Rites research

Broken Rites can reveal that these three women were not the only complainants against Egan. This trial was confined to female complainants, and it covered only these three women who agreed to take part in the prosecution. A fourth woman exercised her right to opt out of the proceedings.
Broken Rites first heard of Father Finian Egan in January 2003, when we were contacted by one of his female victims. Five years later, in 2008, Broken Rites was contacted by a second Egan victim and later by a third, fourth, fifth and sixth victim. These six female victims were from several parishes. They were of various ages. They did not know each other. And they contacted Broken Rites separately, not realising that Broken Rites already knew about Egan.

Why Wally Should Be Heard (Or: Selective Hearing?)

Four Salvation Army Boys’ Homes will be the focus of the next hearings of the Australian Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse beginning on 28th January. Two of the Homes were in Queensland. Riverview (http://lewisblayse.net/2013/06/14/riverview-salvation-army-boys-home-or-unfinished-business/), near Ipswich, and Alkira, in Brisbane.
The word “Alkira” is aboriginal for “bright and sunny” which, needless to say was exactly what it was not.
While this author was in Alkira, another man, Wally McLeod, was in both of them, Riverview and Alkira, at about the same time as this author. Wally is one of the people hoping to give evidence at the hearings. He must be allowed to do so, and on his terms.

Pope Francis may be awesome, but there's the iffy bit

And so another rock star is born. Welcome Francis - that's Pope Francis.
Just as the Norwegian Nobel Committee rushed to sanctify Barack Obama by awarding him the 2009 peace prize, even before he'd done unpacking at the White House, there's a rush by the world's news media to canonise Pope Francis, even before he's warmed the papal throne at the Vatican.
As a new world figure Francis is a sensation, to be sure. One of the more endearing welcomes came from MSNBC's cool and bespectacled young commentator Chris Hayes: ''Given the constraints of what being Pope is, you can operate in one of two ways: you can be a jerk about it, or you can be awesome - and this guy is choosing to be awesome.''

What The Next Hearing Is About (Or: Nothing Is Forever)

Whatever the Australian Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse uncovers in its up-coming hearings on Salvation Army Children’s Homes, history will always remember the abuses committed by Salvation Army officers and staff in their Children’s Homes, due to one person who no longer lives.
The Salvation Army ran an orphanage in the suburb of Woolton in the U.K. city of Liverpool, from 1936 to 2005. It has been listed by www.abuselaw.co.uk as having complaints of child sexual abuse.

Child Sexual Abuse: A victim’s statement

David Cyprys has started an eight year jail sentence and will not see freedom for at least five and a half years. Manny Waks was one of his victim’s and has released his victim impact statement as presented  to Melbourne’s County Court….

The statement:

Manny Waks today
The repeated and ongoing abuse that I suffered at the hands of David Cyprys – someone who was in a position of power and authority, and a person whom I had admired, respected and feared – has had a long-term traumatic impact on me.
During the period of my abuse, my world seemed to have collapsed. Before the abuse I was a regular child who was a reasonably well-behaved son, brother, student and friend.
At home I was the proud older brother to many siblings (I am the second oldest of 17 children). I helped out a fair bit. I was happy and positive. At school, while not necessarily a model student, I completed my work and did not have any particular behavioural issues.

Bundessozialamt boykottiert Verbrechensopfergesetz (VOG)

Australian sex abuse commission gets documents from nuncio

Sydney
The papal nuncio to Australia, Archbishop Paul Gallagher, claimed diplomatic immunity in response to repeated requests for archival documentation that might assist a prosecutor with her inquiry into sex abuse, copies of correspondence released this week show.
In the end, though, Gallagher decided to turn over documents sought as part of the New South Wales Special Commission of Inquiry. In an interview with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation on Friday, Francis Sullivan, CEO of the Truth Justice and Healing Council, said Gallagher told him the Apostolic Nunciature had handed over the documents Dec. 6.
